ShikibuWorld (SKB) is a collection of 10,000 profile picture NFTs released in December 2022. The project’s founder is Buson, a well-known Japanese creator with more than 1 million social media followers.

Shikibu-chan is an eye-catching character that Buson created for his Instagram account in 2017. Shikibu-chan illustrates daily life stories with which readers can empathize and laugh. With her quirky look and authentic sense of humor, the account gained followers exponentially and has become one of the most popular IPs produced by an independent creator in Japan.

Shikibu-chan depicts a famous historical female writer, Murasaki Shikibu, from the Heian Period (794-1185) in Japan.

Murasaki Shikibu was a novelist, poet, and lady-in-waiting to the Emperess at the Imperial court of Japan. She is known as the author of The Tale of Genji, considered the most significant work of Japanese literature and thought to be the world’s oldest novel.  The novel faithfully depicts aristocratic life in 11th- century Japan, and its story is still studied and loved by the Japanese.

ShikibuWorld: Vision

Buson’s aim is to make Shikibu-chan a global IP that all generations can enjoy.

He first produced Shikibu-chan in 2017. “I always enjoyed creating art based on historical figures. Among all my characters, Shikibu-chan was the most popular and used to get the most likes from my followers,” he commented.

“People loved Shikibu-chan’s slightly bizarre look and her wit. I knew that she had the potential to become a successful IP. But at the same time, it was important for me to take time to grow and establish her character carefully.”

As Shikibu-chan gained more popularity, Buson started to receive collaboration offers from major Japanese corporations. For example, Shikibu-chan has been employed for the packaging of popular snacks by Nissin Foods and Calbee.

In addition, Nagasaki-city police use Shikibu-chan for the crime prevention campaign.


Buson’s ambition doesn’t stop there. He aims to make Shikibu-chan a global IP that all generations can enjoy. “Using NFT technology, I would like to make Shikibu-chan a type of IP that everyone can enjoy for hundreds of years. Ant that’s why I decided to create the generative collection, ShikibuWorld, ” Buson said.

ShikibuWorld: Roadmap

Buson has been actively communicating with SKB existing and potential owners through the Discord community, Twitter Spaces, and his channel on Voicy, a Japanese podcast platform.

His sincere, friendly, and passionate personality has won the community members’ trust. The collection’s low listing rate of 0.8% on OpenSea proves that.

Buson is organizing a character exchange event, “Chara Burn,” in April 2023 which introduces new characters to the collection.

In addition, Buson has announced that the collection allows the commercial use SKB characters to its NFT holders (terms & conditions apply) based on holders’ roles in the community.

Another innovative utility the collection offers is the SKB rental which allows people to rent SKB for a small fee. During the rental period, borrowers can enjoy perks like allowlists-raffles and SKB events invitations that SKB holders receive.
